We will be picked up at 8.00am from our Hotel in Nairobi. After an introduction by our driver/guide and a pre-briefing we drive to Naivasha with a stop at the Rift Valley view point. We arrive at about 11.00am at the Fish Eagle Camp, check in and have an early lunch. In the afternoon, we drive to Hell’s Gate National Park for a game drive which ends at Njorowa Gorge where we start of a gorge walk. The scenic gorge which was the setting for “Sheena the Queen of the Jungle” offers an exciting adventure walk for about 1.5 hours to the hot springs at the end of the gorge. In the late afternoon, we return to the camp via the Olkaria Geothermal Power plant for dinner and overnight stay.
After breakfast, we drive with lunchboxes to Mt Longonot (2,776m) for a 5hour hike round the Crater Rim. The views from the rim over the Rift Valley and its lakes are spectacular. Longonot park covers 52sqkm most of it being occupied by the young volcano. The sides of the mountain have beautiful V-shaped valleys and ridges. The stony soil has little vegetation and the crater has an impenetrable forest. In the late afternoon, we return to our Camp just in time for a sunset cruise on Lake Naivasha. There are hippos in the water and various plains game such as Zebras, Giraffes, Buffaloes and Gazelles on the shore. Numerous species of water birds can be seen while Fish Eagles circulate above the waters looking for prey. Dinner and overnight stay will once again be at the camp.
After breakfast, we transfer to the Aberdare National Park. We arrive at the self-catering Fishing Lodge for lunch. While the cook prepares our lunch we take a stroll around the beautiful alpine area. In the afternoon, we take a guided walk with an armed ranger to the highest waterfalls in the region. The Aberdares are a range of volcanic mountains with up to 4000m. There is plenty of wildlife ranging from elephants, buffaloes, lions and rhinos and plain game. To protect the park from encroachment by human activities and protect the neighboring farmers from the wildlife, a 400km long fence has been erected. In the late afternoon, just before sunset we return to the lodge for dinner and overnight stay.
After breakfast, our trekking adventures in the Aberdares continue, this time ascending the Aberdares highest peak-the Oldonyo La Satima (4001m). On clear days, we can capture the magnificent view of the snowcapped Mount Kenya Peaks - the second highest mountain in Africa. After conquering the summit (3hours), we descend to the Road Head (2 hours) for a hot cup of tea and a snack. On the way back to the Fishing Lodge, we may spot Elephants, Buffaloes, plains game and with some luck even Leopards or Lions.
After a leisurely breakfast, we drive with packed lunch to the salient area where most of the wildlife in the Aberdares is concentrated. In the early afternoon we check in at our tree hotel-the Ark. This establishment dates back to the colonial period in Kenya. The Lodge is uniquely shaped to resemble the actual Ark. On the terrace, we watch the animals visiting the well-lit waterhole till late in the night and break for a sumptuous dinner.
We will have our breakfast at the Aberdare Country Club, where we also pick our lunch boxes and drive to Chogoria on the Eastern slopes of Mt. Kenya. Here we find 4X4 vehicles (special Land cruisers) waiting for us at the Forest Gate to take us through scenic rain forest, consisting mainly of bamboo to the Meru Mt. Kenya Bandas at 3000m. The bandas are located at the edge of the forest, and will be our base for our Mt. Kenya exploration.
After breakfast we hike to Lake Ellis, on a path through grassland and forest patches. On the way we find game such as buffaloes, Bongos, waterbucks and Klipspringers. At the scenic lake at 3450m, we break for lunch and return to the Bandas for dinner and overnight stay.
After breakfast and a final glance of the Mt. Kenya peaks, we descend in our Land cruisers to Chogoria. Here our driver is waiting to take us to Samburu National Reserve. During the evening game drives we encounter the Beisa Oryx, the Grevy Zebra and the reticulated giraffes which are prominent in the arid and hostile environment. Along the banks of the scenic Ewaso Nyiro River there are Elephants, Lions and Leopards and plenty of plains game. Dinner and overnight stay will be at Samburu Lodge.
Our day starts with an early breakfast at 6.00am followed by game drives until midmorning. When temperatures rise above 35 degree Celsius and the animals take a rest in the shade, we relax at the pool at the Samburu Lodge. In the late afternoon, we venture out again to watch the bush come to life as the temperatures become bearable. After watching the sunset we return to the lodge for dinner and overnight stay.
After an optional early morning game drive we leave the low lands and drive to the former fertile White Highlands characterized by large commercial wheat and barley farms. In Nanyuki, we stop at the Kentrout restaurant for delicious tilapia lunch and finally return to Nairobi for evening departure or an overnight stay.
