Itinerary Details

Day 1: Arrival Entebbe
Upon arrival at the airport in Entebbe we are welcomed by our driver/guide and transferred to our hotel for a pre safari briefing. If time allows we can opt for a city tour of Kampala

Day 2
Today we set off heading north-west of Kampala through the famous Luwero Triangle and Masindi Town, to the Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary for lunch at the Amuka Lodge. In the afternoon we undertake rhino tracking on foot, a rare experience only available in here. Ziwa Rhino sanctuary was established in 2005 to breed black and white rhino to re-introduce a rhino population in Uganda’s protected areas. In the evening we return to Amuka Lodge for dinner and overnight.

Day 3:
After breakfast we drive to Murchison National Park. We cross the Nile on a ferry and arrive just in time for lunch at the Pakuba lodge. In the afternoon we take a boat cruise towards the falls where the White Nile drops 43m, through a 7m wide gorge, a spectacular scene. The gorge opens up to a wide river bed where we can find Hippos and huge Nile crocodiles. At the shores, we find Elephants, Buffaloes and other plain games. We get off the boat and hike for 45minutes to the top of the falls where the vehicle will be waiting to pick us up and take us back to the lodge for dinner and overnight.

Day 4:
After breakfast we embark on an extensive game drive in one of the oldest wildlife conservancy in East Africa with a wide range of animals in the Nile Valley. We explore the northern side of the park where we marvel at herds of buffalos, dozens of elephants, warthogs and towering giraffes, along with bushbucks, reedbuck, duikers, kobs, oribi and many more. For lunch, we return to lodge. In the afternoon we venture out for a game drive near the lodge where Victoria Nile flows into Lake Albert leaving as Albert Nile, a paradise for the bird watcher. Dinner and overnight will be again at the lodge

Day 5:
We have an early breakfast catch the first ferry across the Nile and proceed to Fort Portal. We drive through the beautiful green and hilly countryside to the unique Miika Resort near Hoima for lunch. After lunch, a brief walk within the hotel takes us to the Katasiha Fort (cave) of Omukama-King Kabalega after whom the Murchinson Falls are also named. Another 3 to 4-hour ascending drive takes us to Fort Portal on the slopes of Ruwenzori. Dinner and Overnight will be at the Mountain of the Moon.

Day 6:
Today we drive to Queen Elisabeth Park with magnificent views over the Ruwenzori Mountains in the west. The park lies between Lake George in the North East and Lake Edward in the South West. The two lakes are connected by the Kazinga Channel. After several photos stop we arrive in time for lunch at the Mweya Safari Lodge. The afternoon game drive takes us to the crater lakes and reveals the wide range of wildlife such as the Uganda Kob, Elephants, Buffaloes, Lions and many more. The game drive ends with a boat ride on the Kazinga Channel where the shores are filled with elephants and buffaloes while the waters harbour crocodiles and hippos. Dinner and Overnight will be at the Mweya Safari Lodge

Day 7
After an early morning breakfast, we set off with packed lunch for chimpanzee tracking in the “Valley of Apes” - the Kyambura Gorge. On our 4 to 5 hour hike, we encounter chimpanzees and a variety of other primates such as colobus, vervet and red-tailed monkeys and the giant forest hogs. In the afternoon we drive south to the Ishasha section of the park. A 2 to 3-hour drive takes us the Ishasha Jungle Lodge for dinner and overnight.

Day 8:
After breakfast we start our morning game drive. The Ishasha sector is certainly one of the very memorable destinations on our tour. The landscape in this section is considerably different from that found in other parts of Queen Elizabeth National Park. The open savannah with sparsely scattered trees is home to Buffaloes, Elephants, Antelopes and the famous tree climbing Lions. The Ishasha river is the border between Queen Elisabeth Park and Virunga National Park in the Democratic Republic of Congo. For lunch, we return to the Lodge and later in the afternoon venture out for another game drive.

Day 9:
A 4-hour drive on a rough road takes us through small scale hilly terraced farmland to Kabale, a country-side town in Southern Uganda, for lunch. After lunch, we use a tarmac road meandering through the hilly landscape also known as the “Switzerland of Africa” to the Rushaga section of the Bwindi Impenetrable Forest, the home of Uganda’s Mountain Gorillas. Dinner and overnight will be at the Gorilla Valley Lodge right in the forest.

Day 10:
After breakfast we proceed to the visitor’s reception centre of the park for a briefing and introduction to our guide who will lead us through the gorilla paths in the thick Bwindi Impenetrable rain forests. To protect the extinction-threatened giants, the tracking is subject to strict rules. A gorilla family can only be visited by a maximum group of 8 visitors and watched for a maximum of 1 hour a day under the instructions of the park rangers. The trek takes 2-6 hours depending on where the Mountain Gorillas are found. We then return to our lodge to reminisce on the day’s activity.

Day 11:
Today we leave Uganda and drive to Ruhengeri /Musanze, the most popular touristic city in Rwanda, the gateway to the Volcanoes National Park. After lunch at the Five Volcano Lodge, we enjoy a canoe ride to the Mukungwa River surrounded by vegetation with a nice view of the volcanoes Karisimbi, Gahinga, Bisoke, Muhabura, and Sabyino. The canoeing takes about 2 hours. We return to the 5Volcano Lodge, a little drenched by the rapids, for dinner and overnight.

Day 12:
After an early breakfast, we drive to Volcanoes National Park headquarters for briefing to start the Dian Fossey’s hike. After another 30 minutes’ drive from the National park HQ, we reach the trailhead and walk to the research center where Dian’s grave is. The walk takes about an hour to 1 and a half hours and gives good views of forest hogs, forest elephants, a variety of primates and bird species. After enjoying the hike we return to the lodge for lunch and drive to Lake Kivu Serena Hotel for relaxing, dinner and overnight.

Day 13:
After breakfast, we drive to Kigali passing by Pfunda Tea Cooperative and have an approximately 3 hour’s tea tour experience. The tour entails tea nursery, farming, and harvesting and processing the green leaves to tasty black tea. After lunch, we drive to Kibuye – the favorite weekend destination for Kigali residents. Dinner and Overnight will be at the scenic Comoran Lodge on the shores of Lake Kivu.

Day 14:
Today we take a leisurely breakfast before we embark on a 3 hour drive to Kigali to check in at the Scheba Hotel. We can opt for a light lunch in the numerous restaurants before we embark on a city tour which includes a visit to the Genocide Memorial to better understand the tragedy that befell Rwanda in 1994 and its remarkable recovery since. The tour through the old and new Kigali takes us to cultural and artistic places like the Inema Arts Centre. In the evening we have dinner at the Rooftop restaurant of Umbabano Hotel overlooking the city of Kigali.

Day 15:
Depending on the time of our departure flight we can visit the large local market in Kimirondo and do some souvenir shopping before we are transferred to the airport.

    The tour will be led by Brigitte Schoepf, a lover of Africa with a wealth of knowledge of the area, having worked in the Loita area in Kenya as nurse and midwife for a couple of years. She has travelled East Africa extensively. Besides German and English, she speaks Kiswahili which enables her to be a perfect bridge between the visitors and the local people enhancing the unique experience.
