Guaranteed Scheduled Mt.Kenya Departure

Tour Highlights

Mt. Kenya stands in the central Kenyan highlands and is the second highest mountain in Africa. Known as ‘Kirinyaga’, which translates to ‘God’s resting place’ by the locals. Its series of snow-capped peaks irresistibly draws visitors with the promise of a great hiking experience. Sitting majestically on the equator, Mt Kenya is said to have one of the most impressive landscapes in East Africa. The 5,199metres Batian summit is a difficult technical climb but the Nelion (5,188m) and Lenana (4,985m) peaks present a good challenge for any fit trekker. A trek up Mt. Kenya not only offers one of Africa’s finest mountain climbing experiences but is also an ideal preparation for a Mt. Kilimanjaro climb.

Itinerary Details

Day 1: Nairobi – Mt. Kenya
We will be picked up at a Nairobi hotel by a Kibo Slopes driver guide and drive through the fertile Farmland of the Central Province to the Naro Moru gate ( 200 Km) of the Mt.Kenya National Park. After registration and introduction to the crew, our todays hike starts at 2600m. The going is easy and it’s a pleasant walking through the forest. About two thirds of the way up after the bridge there are good views to the left north down into the Northern Naromoru valley. The trek ends after 3 to 4 hours at Met station at 3,000m where dinner will be served and overnight rest will be in bunk beds of the mountain hut.

Day 2: Met Station - Teleki Hut
Today’s hike is a little longer. The trail is much steeper 1200m spread over 10 km and can take 5 to 6 hours. After about an hour we reach the end of the forest belt and enter the moorland. The heath and moorland also sports Giant Cabbage Groundsel and Giant Lobelia Deckenii. We make our way up to some scenic rocks known as picnic rocks, for lunch. After lunch we continue on the moorland for a bit longer before joining the edge of the Teleki Valley before we approach our next camp at Teleki Hut for dinner and overnight.

Day 3: Teleki Hut – Point Lenana – Shiptons Camp
Today we will be up early in the morning at 3.00am to start our ascent to Point Lenana. After a short flat section we are onto the frozen screes by torchlight and climbing up and up to reach Austrian Hut at 4790m. At the hut we will take a break, From here we follow a ridge all the way to the summit. The ridge is initially quite broad but it does get narrower and we will take our time over the short sections that need hands as well as feet. There are steel cables on the upper two thirds of the route and though they are not really necessary, they can be reassuring. The sun will rise around 6.am and we will drink in its warmth as well as the spectacular view before descending via the Simba Cole to the Shiptons camp for lunch rest and overnight.

Day 4: Shiptons Camp – Old Moses Camp and back to Nairobi
Today after breakfast and a last glance to Bation, Nelion and Lenana towering above us we embark on a 17 km descend to Old Moses Camp. We reach there for lunch and meet our driver guide who will take us back to Nairobi after bidding our crew farewell.

NATURE OF THE TOUR AND THE REQUIREMENTS:
On average you will be spending about 5 to 7 hour daily in the ascent of Mt. Kenya. You do not need mountaineering skills but you to be in good physical condition. When ascending to the summit day, you will spend more than twelve hours on your feet. The unusual altitude and height places additional strain on the body, which are not to be underestimated. Your health must be in good condition to handle the mountain climbing trip. If you are uncertain about your fitness, please consult your doctor or health physician before departure.
Slow and steady steps during the ascent are important, especially at the beginning. Walking briskly can lead to altitude sickness. The final ascent to the Point Lenana is exhausting and requires a lot of perseverance since it is steep. When hiking through rocky terrain especially on summit ascent, you may experience sore feet.

    LUGGAGE:
The luggage for the ascent is repacked. Please take only what you really need to the mountain. We limit the weight to 8kg per person for the porters. You only need to carry your water bottle, camera and a rain coat in your day bag. We recommend that you do not carry more than 6kg. The luggage which you do not need on the mountain can be left in safe keeping with the driver who takes you to the starting point.
The tour is not suitable for children under the age of 14 years.
